Lunchtime Lecture: Freedom Fighters of CNY

7/12/2024 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Bring your lunch and enjoy a program at the Equal Rights Heritage Center as the Seward House Museum continues this popular series! Robert Searing, Curator of History at the Onondaga Historical Association, examines Syracuse's radical abolitionist history as the grand central depot on the Underground Railroad. The lecture contextualizes the activities of Rev. Jermain Loguen, Rev. Samuel May, Charles Sedgewick, George and Rebecca Barnes, and a host of other reformers. Searing will pay particular attention to the "Jerry Rescue" on October 1, 1851, one of the most significant acts of civil disobedience in the fight to end slavery in the United States. This event is free and open to the public.

Telescope Workshop with Bob Piekiel at Baltimore Woods

7/12/2024 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Yes, it’s back! We don’t do these very often, so come join us for this program! Do you have a telescope and are just not sure how to use it, or want to buy one but don’t know where to begin? Bring a scope if you have one, your questions if you don’t, and we will do the rest!
This two-hour workshop will go over all aspects of telescope set-up and use. Topics will include mounts, alignment, eyepieces and magnification, use of finder scopes, and even how to take pictures through a telescope. We should have a good view of the 1st-quarter moon, an easy target for beginners. We will start indoors, in the nature center, rain or shine, with a hands-on course of using your scopes, and if the sky is clear, we will end up outside doing some actual observing under the stars.

This program is designed for ages 10 and up. Adult supervision is required for anyone under 18-years old. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required.

Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: The Comfort of Trees and Experiences Shared on Our Journey at Baltimore Woods

Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: The Comfort of Trees and Experiences Shared on Our Journey at Baltimore Woods

7/13/2024 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM

Baltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to Partner with Matt Young’s Mindful Nature Expeditions to offer a series of 6 outdoor excursions between February and July of 2024. This naturalist wellness class will combine observing nature with mindfulness, creating a practice that incorporates a heightened sense of awareness, both in ourselves and the environment around us. Labeling or identifying species is not the only focus, but instead, the intention is also to slow down and notice how to use nature, including birds, butterflies, trees, flowers, and more as our guide. This style of observation invites reciprocity, sit-spots and self-reflection, journaling and exploration, and an acknowledgment of our physical and emotional responses while we engage with the outdoors.

This is the final of 6 sessions which will be focused on “The comfort of trees and the experiences we’ve shared together on our journey through the classes” that will take place both at Baltimore Woods Nature Center and the CNYLT Pleasant Valley Preserve.

This program is designed for ages 18 and up. Space is limited, online registration is required. To learn more about the overall program and guide Matt Young, visit baltimorewoods.org/nourishing-ourselves-through-nature/

Forest Therapy Walk

Forest Therapy Walk

7/14/2024 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Experience nature in a unique way on a guided Forest Therapy Walk throughout Baltimore Woods! Forest Therapy, also known as “forest bathing,” stems from a Japanese practice known as Shinrin Yoku. Led by June Leo-Randazzo, a Certified ANFT Forest Therapy Guide, this program invites participants to immerse themselves in nature and open their senses to the surroundings of the forest.

During this slow, mindful, and quiet walk, June will provide a series of relaxing invitations to engage all your senses, release your mind chatter, and deepen connections to nature, allowing you to connect with yourself and others through nature in new ways. You will have opportunities throughout for both individual reflection and to come together as a group to listen and share what we are noticing. The 2.5 hour walk ends with a tea ceremony with wildcrafted tea foraged from the area and snacks.

This walk is designed for ages 14 and up. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

07/14/2024 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM
