Summer Solstice Forest Therapy Walk

6/22/2024 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Experience nature in a unique way on a guided Forest Therapy Walk throughout Baltimore Woods! Forest Therapy, also known as “forest bathing,” stems from a Japanese practice known as Shinrin Yoku. Led by June Leo-Randazzo, a Certified ANFT Forest Therapy Guide, this program invites participants to immerse themselves in nature and open their senses to the surroundings of the forest.

During this slow, mindful, and quiet walk, June will provide a series of relaxing invitations to engage all your senses, release your mind chatter, and deepen connections to nature, allowing you to connect with yourself and others through nature in new ways. You will have opportunities throughout for both individual reflection and to come together as a group to listen and share what we are noticing. The 2.5 hour walk ends with a tea ceremony with wildcrafted tea foraged from the area and snacks.

This walk is designed for ages 14 and up. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Schola’s small-ensemble program “It’s Telemann’s Time,” to be presented Saturday June 22 at First Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles, will feature four concertos of the baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann.

This instrumental ensemble, featuring well-regarded Central New York professional players, is a new venture of Schola Cantorum, which has been known since 1975 primarily for its a cappella early music vocal performances. The June 22 program (with the addition of a bonus flute concerto) is a reprise, for Skaneateles, of the new ensemble’s well-received January 2024 debut concert in Dewitt.

The aim of this new ensemble is to provide Central New York professional players the opportunity to play historically-informed, well-polished performances of Baroque repertoire, and Central New York audiences the opportunity to hear those performances. The present basic configuration of five string players is planned to expand in September to eleven string players. (Those who heard the January performance have attested to the robust sound produced by the group in its present, smaller configuration).

Three of the players are current Syracuse Orchestra members. Barry Torres, music director of Schola Cantorum, has been coaching the ensemble.

The June 22 concert at First Presbyterian is at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be available at the door at $20 ($15 for seniors, $5 for students and children). The concert duration is about 90 minutes.

Like Charles Ives, Telemann possessed an uncanny knack for synthesizing disparate musical elements into a cohesive whole. His music can be, in turns, gracious and graceful, fluid, jarring, aristocratic, or rustic. All these turns will be heard in the June 22 concertos concert.

A contemporary and friend of J.S. Bach, Telemann (1681–1767) composed an enormous amount of music. Highly regarded in his own time, he fell into comparative neglect, and even disparagement, in the 19th and early 20th centuries; only since then, gradually, has appreciation grown for the musical quality of what he wrote. Thus, now, “It’s Telemann’s Time.”

More information about the concert, and about Schola Cantorum of Syracuse, is at ScholaSyracuse.com.

6/28/2024 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Bring your lunch and enjoy a program at the Equal Rights Heritage Center as the Seward House Museum continues this popular series. University of Rochester scholar Sarabeth Rambold explores how, in the decades between the American Revolution and the Civil War, work moved outside the family home leading to “separate spheres” of gendered influence. As Rambold argues, the “domestic sphere” of women became the center of female authority and cultural creation. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: Orchids, Butterflies and Bog Walking in an Outdoor Playground at Baltimore Woods

6/29/2024 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM

Baltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to Partner with Matt Young’s Mindful Nature Expeditions to offer a series of 6 outdoor excursions between February and July of 2024. This naturalist wellness class will combine observing nature with mindfulness, creating a practice that incorporates a heightened sense of awareness, both in ourselves and the environment around us. Labeling or identifying species is not the only focus, but instead, the intention is also to slow down and notice how to use nature, including birds, butterflies, trees, flowers, and more as our guide. This style of observation invites reciprocity, sit-spots and self-reflection, journaling and exploration, and an acknowledgment of our physical and emotional responses while we engage with the outdoors.

This is the fifth of 6 sessions which will be focused on “Orchids, butterflies and bog walking in an outdoor playground.” at Jam Pond.

This program is designed for ages 18 and up. Space is limited, online registration is required. To learn more about the overall program and guide Matt Young, visit baltimorewoods.org/nourishing-ourselves-through-nature/

Lunchtime Lecture: Women’s Intellectual Labor and Domestic Authority in the Antebellum Home
