Effective Communications Strategies - Virtual Education Program

Effective Communications Strategies - Virtual Education Program

5/23/2022 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Communication is more than just talking and listening – it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. The Effective Communication Strategies program of the Alzheimer’s Association was designed to provide practical information and resources to help dementia caregivers learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages from people with dementia

Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior - Virtual Education Program

5/26/2022 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM

Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join us to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.

Ulysses Quartet – “The Power of Four”

5/26/2022 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM

Christina Bouey, Rhiannon Banerdt, violin; Colin Brookes, viola; Grace Ho, cello

We’re excited to present the Ulysses Quartet, winner of the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the 2018 Schoenfeld International String Competition, who will guide us on an exploration of the string quartet’s capabilities and history. We begin with its Enlightenment-era origins (with Haydn), dance our way through the folk music of two different cultures (Danish and Azerbaijani), before delving into Beethoven’s monumental and intensely personal contribution to the genre, Opus 132.

FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN: String Quartet in G minor, Op. 20, No. 3
TRADITIONAL (arr. Danish String Quartet): Folk Songs
FRANGHIZ ALI-ZADEH: Rǝqs (Dance)
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN: String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132

Love lavender? Crazy about chamomile? With herbs grown right in your garden, you can create products that benefit the body and soul. If you want to learn more, join us for a morning in the Baltimore Woods herb garden! We’ll get to know some herbs and their uses throughout history and today. Then, we’ll gather some herbs and use them to make our own balms.

This program is for adults. Please dress for the weather. Pre-registration is required and due to limited capacities associated with the pandemic, walk-ins cannot be accommodated. At Baltimore Woods Nature Center, the health and safety of our staff and visitors is of utmost importance.
