Not as well-known is the story of her early life, from her birth in Frankfurt, through her family’s migration to Amsterdam, to the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands, and the time after her arrest, including the fates of the people she hid with. During this virtual program, John Damond will fill in those pieces and tell the story of the diary within the context of the war and the Holocaust. We begin with its Enlightenment-era origins (with Haydn), dance our way through the folk music of two different cultures (Danish and Azerbaijani), before delving into Beethoven’s monumental and intensely personal contribution to the genre, Opus 132.
